The film is a mess and it's a shame because I've heard the true story of 'Secretariat' could have made a really good movie!

'SECRETARIAT': Two Stars (Out of Five)

Cheap and contrived sappy Disney fare, I didn't expect much but I
expected more than I got (Roger Ebert gave this movie 4 out of 4 stars
but he's quickly become one of films worst and most unreliable
critics). The movie is directed by Randall Wallace (who wrote
'BRAVEHEART', 'PEARL HARBOR', 'WE WERE SOLDIERS' and 'THE MAN IN THE
IRON MASK', he also directed the latter two). It's written by Mike Rich
(who also wrote such other cheesy fare as 'RADIO' but did a decent job
scripting 'FINDING FORRESTER' and 'THE ROOKIE') and based on the book
'Secretariat: The Making of a Champion' by William Nack, who also
served as a consultant on the film. The cast is filled with the
talented John Malkovich, Dylan Walsh, Scott Glenn and James Cromwell
who all do decent enough jobs but there are other sappy supporting
players and an over the top hammy turn from Diane Lane in the lead.

The film revolves around Penny Chenery (Lane), a mother and housewife
who takes over control of her father's (Glenn) failing horse stable
business when her mother dies and her father becomes ill. She adopts
and manages 'Secretariat' (also known as 'Big Red' or just 'Red') and
with the help of an experienced horse trainer named Lucien Laurin
(Malkovich) trains him to be the first Triple Crown winner in twenty
five years. Despite her lack of experience she surprises everyone and
becomes a star in the predominately male ran industry and saves her
father's business as well as her family. The film is based on the book
I mentioned which is based on the true story of one of the greatest
loved sporting events in world history.

I didn't know much about the story of 'Secretariat' prior to seeing the
film but have since read up on it. His story is a highly loved and
inspiring event looked back on fondly by many. Before really knowing
this my initial feelings on the film were that it felt way too forced
and cheesy. After reading people's feelings on the true story and the
film I think even less of the movie. Many who cherish witnessing the
events when they happened on TV or later youtube found the movie to be
greatly disappointing. They say it centered too much on Penny and her
unimportant family drama and not enough on the horse. They also say
seeing the actual footage of the races 'Secretariat' won are far more
powerful and impressing than the reenactments in the film. A lot of
this has to do with poor directing (as well as writing). Wallace can be
a decent writer but so far he hasn't been a very impressive director
and it really shows in this film. Lane's performance is over the top
and hammy (and I found her character to be pretty annoying and
unlikeable as well) but she is a good actress in the right role. Her
bad acting here is probably largely due to the writing and directing.
The film is cheesy, overly sappy, devoid of any true emotion and full
of racist stereotypes and false ideology. The film is a mess and it's a
shame because I've heard the true story of 'Secretariat' could have
    made a really good movie.
